Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2018 Ready-to-Wear Review

"What are you looking at?" asked the iconic voice of Madonna from above, as an army of Viguée Le Brun-esque painters pretended to work on canvases at the center of Thom Browne's massive spectacle of a fashion show. What was on the canvases was far less interesting than the bonkers mashups of garments that began to strut down the catwalk. Nipped in waists, massive shoulders, and full length skirts in shades of grey harkened back to 1940's silver screen films. One technique, the embellishing of crystals and chains onto a gown go give it a moire effect from far away was absolutely luxurious yet inspiring. The drama was certainly there, with models dragging their trains and striking poses whenever they could. Mink flowers adorned wool blazers, embellished column dresses glittered in warped ways, and trompe-l'œil chunks of suiting hung from shirts. A hodge-podge of excellent craftsmanship struck the viewer like Dadaism. Ironic yet needed in a fashion climate so commercially driven that hardly any new ideas are spawning. Thom Browne has always been the greatest thing to have ever come out of the University of Notre Dame, and this latest outing only reinforces that fact.
