Valentino Fall/Winter 2020 Menswear Review

Having the extra-terrestrial beauty FKA Twigs narrate the Valentino Fall/Winter 2020 Menswear show could’ve been a huge distraction. And it was. The musician was in head-to-toe couture, with a dazzling crystal fencing mask and white beaded gown. Comparing her spectacular beauty to a menswear collection that usually consists of the regular wool tailoring, logo parkas, and covetable leather bags and loafers is nearly impossible. They are on completely opposite ends of the luxury fashion spectrum. But Pierpaolo Piccioli put these two together for a purpose.

The fantastic monochrome suiting that opened the show was decorated with matching flower stem prints that added a graphic beauty on otherwise simple looks. Men today aren’t afraid to dress beautifully, according to Piccioli. The majority of the collection was business as usual, however. Covetable leather logo crossbody and bum bags, hot thick-soled black leather loafers, and graphic branded tees and sweaters will surely be seen on Instagram influencers the world over.

Every type of expensive coat was there too, from fur-trimmed parkas to double-breasted trenches. However, those particular trenches with the side straps that nearly grazed the floor, like sashes were something new that will hopefully last longer than just one season. One black denim suit, with thin tapered lapels and a wide silhouette was quite a standout, too. Thankfully, Piccioli is the king of color combinations, that’s always clear in his couture collections. It’s more subtle for his menswear, however. Specifically, matching a copper brown suit with a peek of a mint green tee hidden underneath was quite significant. While Piccioli went on about men being able to wear things that used to be considered feminine, this collection was nothing new or boundary pushing that hasn’t already been explored for the past twenty years in menswear. Still, those leather bags will no doubt sell out in a heartbeat.
